At a seance held ina semi-darkened drawing-room, with closed doors, and a company of sometwenty persons assembled, a very large and splendidly illustrated bookwith paper covers, suddenly fluttered down from the ceiling and droppedin view of all present on the table in their midst. The book had been kept for many previous months in a locked drawer,in a room above that wherein it now appeared, and no human being at thattime, could have had access to the place from which it was taken. This book was passed round amongst the company, of whom the authorwas one, and the illustrations being very fine, it was examined with so much. Whilst the visitors were commenting on the astonishing though by nomeans unprecedented manner in which this manifestation had occurred,the Spirits spelled out by rappings the request that the lights should beput out. This was prompdy done^ but in less than twenty seconds anotherwell-known signal was given for the restoration of the lights. Deemingthat Some preliminary had been forgotten which the Spirits wished attendedto, the chandelier was hurriedly relighted, when it was found that themargins of two leaves, at the place where the book was lying open, werecovered with very fine pencilled writing.
