THE NEW PHLOXES, "Starred and ; When first introduced from Germany we planted quite an area in both the "Slar of Qiiedlinbiirg" and " Fimbriata" Phlox, from which we have made careful selections each year, and now for the first time are able to offer the extra selected seed of our own growing, and as the two varieties are continually crossing, we offer both together as "Starred and Fringed ; They are reafiy entitled to rank as a new race, and are beyond question the most striking novelties in Phloxes ever introduced, being of unique and indescribable beauty. In the Fringed flowers the petals are partly fimbriate, and partly three-toothecf, all distinctly bordered with white, which together with the bright eye of the center, picturesquely contrasts with the magnificent velvety colors, in more than twenty dis- tinct shades, while many of the flowers are as large as the Orandiflora Phlox. In the Starred Phloxes the pointed central teeth of the petals (five in number) are five to six times as long as the lateral ones and project beyond them like little spines, inch long, giving the flowers a distinctly marked, regular star-like form, the beauty of which is enhanced by the broad white mar- gins bordering the edges of the petals. The Star Phloxes also embrace more than twenty colors, so that our Extra Fine Mixed Seed comprises more than forty varieties of this unique and strikingly beautiful strain.
