London, UK. 5th Dec 2016. David Barnado, the great-great nephew of Barnado's founder, Thomas Barnado; Jean Clark, a former Barnados girl and sole fundraiser for the memorial. A two metre high memorial to honour 513 Barnardo's children buried in unmarked graves is unveiled in Tower Hamlets Cemetry Park in east London. The two metre high Portland stone sculpture, depicting a pair of hands releasing a symbolic cockney sparrow was designed by master carver Tom Nicholls and unveiled by David Barnardo, the great-great nephew of the charity's founder, Thomas Barnardo and legendary Barnado's fundraiser, Jean Clark. The children were buried between 1876 and 1924 but did not receive headstones because the charity’s founder, Thomas Barnardo, survived on a shoestring to care for London’s most vulnerable children.
