Robot Football. Robots play in the 1997 World Cup Robot Soccer (RoboCup '97) competition. The inter- national RoboCup promotes the development of intelligent robots that could be sent into hostile environments in the future. These small-size category robots are less than 15 centimetres in diameter and play on a pitch the size of a table- tennis table. RoboCup matches have two 5-minute periods of play between 2 teams of up to five robots, with a 10 minute interval between them to allow the robots to recharge their batteries. RoboCup '97 was held in Nagoya, Japan. RoboCup '98 will be held in Paris, France, in July.
