RAT-TAIL KNITTING Materials Required:— A large cork, large reel^ or a small piece of a narrowcardboard roller, strong pins, preferably those knownas iaundry pins, a small crochet hook, coloredwools. This is known as rat-tail knitting, orcork or bobbin work. It can be made eitherby boring a hole in a large flat cork andsetting seven or eight pins in round thishole, or by setting the pins into a reel witha large hole, but I have found the bestthing is to get a small tube of cardboardsuch as paper is rolled on (out of a toiletroll, for instance), and to stick the pinsfirmly into the cardboard, as in Figure or six pins will do. Take colored wool RAT-TAIL KNITTING 45. and loop it once roundeach pin, then wrap itvery loosely once roundthe whole circle of pins, and, with another largepin or a small crochethook, lift each loop upand over the last wrap ofthe thread, and over thehead of the pin. Do thisright round the circle ofpins, so that you haveFig. 25. now a second series of loops made from the thread which waswrapped round above the first ones, whilethe first loops have begun to descend intothe tube. Work round and round till theend of your knitted rat-tail appears outof the tube at the lower end. You can knoton lengths of wool of other colors andmake very pretty reins with them. Youcan, if you like, work with two difiPerentlycolored threads, all the time using one col-or for the loops you lift, over a wrap threadof another color, alternating as you workround and round your circle. This is really 46 THE PLAYWORK BOOK just the way a knitting-machine works, very much simplified. You can do thesame on a larger scale with a wooden ri
