Fig. 432 represents the heck-ling or combing machine by whichthe fibres of the material are tobe opened, and the tow is a transverse section, takennearly through the middle, in avertical direction. Perpendicularstandards form the ends of themachine, which are connected to-gether by longitudinal rods orbars secured by nuts. The hecklepoints intended to act upon theflax are mounted in the framesa, b, c, and d, and the stricks offlax held in the clamps e € e, asdescribed, are suspended from thebar or edge-rail, extending throughthe machine. 432. FLAX. 501 In order to render the principles of this machine and its mode of working evident, itmay be desirable to show in an abstract form the manner in which the heckles are broughtinto operation upon the flax, and for this purpose two diagrams are delineated in , 434. Supfose two sets of combs or heckle points be mounted upon frames a and b, as inthese figures, each frame being moveable by means of cranks c, c, and d, d, connected insuch manner that they both turn with the same speed in opposite directions, it is evidentthat every part of the frames and combs will move in circles corresponding to those de-scribed by the cranks; the points of the combs travelling in the directions of the arrows, and in circles represented by dots. During this movement, whilst performing the first descending quarter of the circle, thecranks bring the frames together as in fig. 433. They beg
