Blue sky view frost on sand ripples beach to sea ice saltmarsh grass, looking west from Fairhaven, Fylde Coast, Lancashire, UK

The winter of 2010-2011 included the coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature was minus 1 degree Celsius. In some places the temperature was down to minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 included two spells of severe winter weather in the UK with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The beach between Fairhaven and St Annes, on Lancashire's Fylde Coast, in December 2010 displayed large areas of frost and land-fast sea ice, several centimetres thick. A blue sky view, west of the Outer Promenade around Fairhaven Lake, of white frost on sand ripples beach towards a saltmarsh with an expanse of land-fast sea ice. Sine 2010 the saltmarsh has accreted and expanded onto the beach in the foreground.
