Menard after a careful research into the ancientLiturgies concludes that the mitre was not in useprior to the year 1000. Contemporary art bearsout this statement, and Hefele concurs by writing:It is not till the eleventh century that representa-tions of Popes, bishops and abbots with the mitreoccur; though from that time onwards they are Supplementary Vestments 493 very numerous.
