The small Clarinets andthe Bb Clarinets lead the melody in the upperpositions; the second Clarinets join the melodyin thirds, sixths, in unison or in the lower octave,or they are employed for the execution of effec-tive accompanying passages; sustained notesfor these instruments, especially in the lowerposition, are very effective. The following movement from Verdis Tra-viata (Introduction) arranged for Et> and Bt>Clarinets, creates a beautiful and most delicateeffect.
