The caption for this late 19th-century illustration reads: Suliotes. The Suliotes were a people of Epirus who, early in this century, rebelled against Turkey, but surrendered on promise of pardon. The treacherous Turks then attempted to exterminate the entire race. Such of them as escaped fled to Greece, burning to avenge their slaughtered brothers; and under their famous chief, Marco Bozzarris, they took a leading part in the Greek war of independence. In many points of costume, appearance, and character, they differ from the other Greeks, so we you here a little group of them of both sexes.
