For twenty-one years he was in the employ of Star-buck Brothers, working his way up from the humble positionid .sailor to be commander of some of the finest ships that everleft that port. In 1841 he retired from the sea, and small farm in West S]]ringfiehl, Mass., where he lived forseven years, and became one of the prominent men of thetowii, taking an active interest in all tliat jiertained to thewelfare of his fellow-men, and being elected to represent themin the State Legislature.
