Human chromosomes. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of human chromosomes. Each chrom- osome comprises two identical chromatids joined at a centromere. The centromere also divides each chromatid into a long and short arm. Chromosomes are only seen like this during cell division. They are found in every cell nucleus and comprise genetic material, DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), in association with proteins. Most human cells contain 46 chromosomes: 23 inherited from the mother and 23 from the father. Magnification unknown.
