Sylvan Lake. Custer State Park. Part of the dam built by Theodor Reder in 1881.

Sylvan Lake, sometimes called "The Crown Jewel" of Custer State Park, is not a natural lake. It was built in 1881 when Theodor Reder damed the Sandy Gulch. It soon became a popular visitor attraction. Today people visit as tourists, to fish, hike, climb and hire small power boats. The lake covers acres and is 6145 feet above sea level.
