A side view of the Skogafoss Waterfall, with a vertical rainbow rising through the spray from the plunge pool, Southern Iceland

Skogafoss is a 25m wide, 62m high waterfall with a large plunge pool often with a rainbow, seen here, rising vertically through the spray, from a high point in the walk up the side of the falls to the upper valley. The fall is a result of isostatic readjustment of the land or the land 'springing up', after the release of billions of tonnes of ice weight at the end of the Pleistocene Ice Age, to create a step in the gradient of the River Skoga in its course to the sea.
