In digging the foun-dation it was necessary to drive piles on which the foundationswere constructed. The orchard referred to was that of a Ger-man named Kurtz, whose house stood on the west of the MainStreet where Chelton Avenue has been opened through. Kurtzwas a great horticulturalist and botanist and his gardens containedmany rare specimens. He was a friend of Matthias Kin, aneccentric man who was employed by German horticulturaliststo collect seeds and plants for them. He spent most of thetime exploring the wilds of North America, and it was to himthat Kurtz was indebted for many of his specimens.
