Western gate tower of the Inner City of Jiayuguan China


The Jiayuguan fortress marks the western end of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, and is also the best preserved and most grand fortress along the wall. The wall base is comprised of hardened loess 6 metres high, which is topped with a 3 metre high brick wall, and then a metre brick buttress. The Silk Road route passed through Jiayuguan heading west to Dunhuang where it then split into its main north and south branches.
