An old engraving showing mechanisms of magazine firearms from the 1800s – these American ones have integral, internal mechanisms. It is from a Victorian book of the 1880s. The top cross-section is a Winchester repeating rifle – the guard below the trigger opens to eject a spent cartridge and push a fresh one into the chamber. Centre is a Ward-Burton – a cartridge supply tube is below the barrel has a spring to push cartridges back. It is operated via the ‘handle’ on top. The Cullen magazine rifle (bottom) has cartridges carried in four rows in the stock – this also works via a trigger guard.

An old engraving showing the various mechanisms of magazine firearms from the 1800s – these American examples have integral, internal mechanisms. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The top cross-section is a Winchester repeating rifle – the guard below the trigger opens to eject a spent cartridge and push a fresh one up into the firing chamber. Centre is a Ward-Burton example – a cartridge supply tube is below the barrel has a spiral spring pushing cartridges back. The action of supplying a fresh cartridge is by the ‘handle’ on top of the weapon. The Cullen magazine rifle (bottom) has cartridges carried in four rows of ten in the stock – this also works via a trigger guard. A magazine is an ammunition storage and feeding device for a repeating firearm, either integral within the gun (internal/fixed magazine) or externally attached (detachable magazine). Cartridges are sequentially loaded into a firing position in the barrel chamber by the firearm's moving action. A detachable magazine is sometimes called a clip.
