Your rules on page 162 of the May number are firstclass. Rate the engine fairly; keep up the repairs; watchthe handling at the roundhouse; provide them withgood water and give the firemen good coal—then ifyour road foreman of engines or traveling engineercannot produce results, give him an assistant beforeyou discharge or set him back. All of the above itemsare obtainable and reasonable in price; are they logicalor not? Heavy Passenger Locomotive, Chicago & Alton T will be remembered that about a year ago, after a number of exhaustive tests, the Chi-cago & Alton Railway had two large passen-ger locomotives built to handle their heavytraffic. These engines were described in theRailway Master Mechanic, April; 1903, page163. The Baldwin Locomotive Works hasrecently turned out a number of locomotivesof the same general type for the Alton tobe used in handling their portion of the traffic to andfrom the St. Louis Exposition. It is interesting to com-pare the more recent design with that of the older enginesin order to observe what changes have been deemed ad-visable after a years trial. The modification of theboiler wherein there appears a difference in ratios of sur-faces and a construction which permits freer circulation, are the most noticeable. While the total weight of each new engine is 2,000pounds greater than that of either of the older, the laterengine carries 6,590 pounds less on drivers and greater tion o
