Asthe war progressed he deter-mined on a more active partthan the chaplaincy, and wasoffered and accepted the lieu-tenant-colonelcy of tlic 141stN. Y. infantry, serving until1863, when he was promotedto a colonelcy and given com-mand of the 35th U. S. coloredtroops, and was mustered outof the service in 1866, withthe rank of brigadier-generalby brevet. He re-entered theministry and had charge ofthree churches: one at Owe-go, N. Y., until 1870: remov-ed to Poughkeepsie, N. Y.,where he remained three years,and then to Brooklyn, N.
