Vorticella sp. ciliate, light micrograph

Phase contrast light micrograph of Vorticella sp. ciliate. Vorticella is a bell-shaped protozoan most commonly found in freshwater. They feed on bacteria and have cilia to help generate a water current to direct prey towards their mouths. Their stalks attach to substrates and can coil up and contract very quickly into a helix to move them. Magnification: x186 when printed on 10 cm wide.
