Sassnitz, Ruegen, Germany; evening at the fishing harbour

Sassnitz is the largest and once eleganteste resort on Ruegen but since the end of the 19th. century has lost popularity to Binz due to the absence of a sandy beach and the industrialisierung of the town. Many of the old buildings are now being restored to their former glory. In the years of communism after 1945 the fishing fleet consisted of up to 200 vessels. The harbour jetty is the longest in Europe with a length of 1986 Sassnitz was an important ferry terminal to the Baltic states and Russia. A new terminal has now been built in Mukran, 5 km. to the south.
