Palmistic diagram from Richard Saunder's Palmistry: The Secrets thereof Disclosed 1664. Almost all these special signs purport to represent indications of violent deaths, but some are merely signs of misfortune. For example, the swirl-sign in the centre of the hand is supposed to be an indication of one who is to be a parricide, while the weak signs under the finger of mercury merely denote that the person will be given to thieving. Of course, in Saunder's day, thieving could lead to a violent death by the rope.
