In sculpture,as in painting, grace, as the chief end in view, came to besubstituted for the grand style of the age of Louis XIV,with its conventional dignity, its imposing and sometimesexaggerated splendors. A new style, full of mannerisms andelegant artifices, was now the fashion, — a stj^le alread}^ veryfar removed from the point of departure of the French school,but which, being in perfect harmony with the thought andtaste of the period, wielded an influence felt ever3wherethroughout Europe.
