The instrument, on its first invention, was generally knownby the names of Galileos tube, the perspective, the doubleeye-glass: the names of telescope and microscope were sug-gested by Demisciano.—T. Drinkwater. Note.—The name telescope was employed by Galileo asearly as 1612, but was not used in English until forty yearslater. Sometimes the simple terms trunk and cylinder wereused instead.
