A large bronze bust marks the grave of the German political philosopher Karl Marx. Highgate cemetery, North London, England, United Kingdom.

Karl Marx 1818-1883 was born in Trier in the Moselle region of Germany. In 1849 Marx moved to London and remained based in the city for the rest of his life. A few years after the death of his wife Jenny he himself died of ill health. He was buried in Highgate Cemetery by family and friends on 17th March 1883. There were fewer than a dozen mourners at his funeral. In 1956 Marx’s remains were moved about 100 metres to their present location and this monolithic memorial was erected, funded by the British Communist Party. The original gravestone is built into the plinth.
