The high-altar is Renaissance, the stallslate fourteenth or fifteenth century, and there are doorsof the period of Frangois I. fixed to the wall on thenorth side of the choir. In the carving of the easternend strong classic influence is evident, notwithstand-ing its date, going so far in some instances as thecopying of well-known details. The north gallery of the Romanesque cloister hasbeen made into a sacristy. It consists of an arcadeof six arches, resting on colonnettes, with moulded. A FUNERAL MASS 337 bases and uncarved caps, while beyond an arch whichgives entrance to a writing-room are two more. Onthe opposite side is a large arch over the tomb of anunidentified Archbishop, attended by nine small figuresof Bishops. The carving of the archivolt is very fineand rich, reminding one of Poitou, though the sarco-phagus is unornamented. To the right one carvedcap remains. To the left is a smaller arch, with carvedhood-mould. There are a few tapestries in the church, verdure -like things with figures, dated 1696, anda good deal of modern decoration and stained first time we entered the church a funeral Masswas going on—the cofiin covered with a white pall,with a black cross on each side and end, two tapers oneach side, and a black cross standing at the end awayfrom the altar. Besides the mourners, other figuresknelt in the darker parts of the aisles, and the lofty
