They were on the north-easterly side of the promontory, and quite close to the believe that here is where were planted the six brass piecesgiven to the colonists by the merchants of London, and thatthis site was fortified earlier than that of the present Fort Con-stitution ; I believe it to have been under the direction of Neale. I endeavored to save these ancient memorials ofthe forefathers of New Hampshire, in vain. Then 1 requestedthe engineers to make an accurate drawing of their position andform, so to preserve at least the record and evidence of theirformer existence; but they did not listen; and this page, and theaccompanying drawing, which I have made from memorjs butwhich may be trusted, must be the only testimony concern-ing them.
