Pick's disease. Light micrograph of a section of the brain of a patient suffering from Pick's disease, or focal lobar atrophy. A Pick body, a characteristic feature of the disease, is seen at centre. Pick bodies are formed by the accumulation of protein filaments within the nerve cells (neurones) of the brain, severely impairing their ability to process sensory information. Pick's disease is a degenerative condition that causes shrinking of the temporal and frontal lobes of the brain, accompanied by the death of the brain's neurones. This is the hippocampus, the part of the brain that generates emotion. Magnification unknown.
