St Mary the Virgin's church, Painswick, Stroud, Gloucestershire, C15th parish church (nave & tower 1480-90, spire 1632) with unique collection of pedestal & table tombs & monuments mainly C17th & C18th: photos mainly chest tomb & tea caddy. Carved in local limestone by Painswick craftsmen they reflect prosperity of local wool merchants. C18th monument to John Bryan, who carved many of the tombs, is a plain stone pyramid modelled on tomb of Caius Cestius in Rome. c. 99 clipped yews in churchyard, mainly C18th, legend: Devil removed 100th every time it was planted, will never allow 100 trees to grow. 4 Oct 93
