Transgenic rice research. Researcher adding moth larvae to transgenic rice being cultivated in a greenhouse. This is intended to test their resistance to the larva, which normally eat the rice plants. These plants have been isolated from the other plants with a mesh cover. Transgenic plants are ones that have been genetically modified by adding genes from different species. Cultivated rice (Oryza sativa) is a key food crop, forming the staple diet of around half the world's population. Photographed at the French agricultural research institute, CIRAD, in Montpellier, France.
