Many died during the■winter, and the rest suffered great hardship. In the spring they builtrude homes, erected a meeting house, and began planting. Before they lauded, the Pilgrims laid the foundations of afree government, \vhen they elected John Carver governor for a year, and agreed upon certainrules by which he and they were tobe guided. There were one hundred and twocolonists at Plymouth, since one diedon the voyage and a child was bornbefore the people landed. About half-of them perished during the longwinter, and the rest suffered fromso much sickness that at one time,only seven were well enough to work. But these seven, withgrim fortitude and bravery, cooked the food, chopped woodfor the fire, tended the sick, and looked after their comfort.
