He is Mayor of Salt Lake City, and standshigh among the dignitaries of the church, but he ruleswith an iron hand, and cruelty and oppression predomi-nate in all he does. Thisapostle is a practical polyga-mist, as are all the rest, buthe has a convenient way ofutilizing the system. He mar-ries a cook, a laundress, asempstress, a dairy-maid, orany servant he may happento need. It is so much cheap-er to marry domestics than tohire them. Under the latterarrangement he would becompelled to pay them fortheir services, while by theformer he is only obliged to give them shelter, food, andclothing. His wives represent nearly every nationality,and when visitors come to the house, the first Mrs. Hydeintroduces her husbands other wives, as Mr. Hydes Ger-man wife, Mr. Hydes English wife, Mr. Hydes Danishwife, and so on, until all are presented.
