The problem involved in enlarging the shop was one oftenmet with, namely, to utilize facilities to the bestadvantage in connection with a large extension. The shopsas they stood prior to 1917 were built in 1882. At this timea tract of land comprising 640 acres was purchased and theWest Burlington shops were erected, much of the equipmentbeing moved out from Burlington.
