Tim Berners-Lee (born 1955), British computer scientist and principal developer of the World Wide Web (WWW). Berners-Lee studied at Oxford University. After working in industry, Berners-Lee moved to CERN, the European particle physics lab near Geneva. There he developed the Web, a global network for information sharing based on hypertext documents. These are text documents which have other data, such as images or links to other computers, embedded in them. This work started in 1989 and continued throughout the early 1990s. Berners-Lee left CERN in 1994, and in 2001 joined MIT (the Massachusetts Institute of Technology), USA.
