Red brick Chess and Checkers House, with trees and fallen autumnal leaves on wet pathway, Central Park South, New York City
Central Park's Chess and Checkers House, one of five visitors centres run by the Central Park Conservancy, was built in 1952, by private funds, to replace the Kinderberg or 'children's mountain' play area. Players either bring their own or borrow pieces from Central Park Conservancy Staff, who are also available to arrange a partner to play with. Dominoes and backgammon are also available. In 1986 a rustic pergola was built to provide sun and rain shade for players.
