H. Devries). Points made by the Minister in his talk were: In the eight years since the Government subsidy of £1 for £1 was introduced £52,000 has been spent on the purchase of books for school libraries, half by the Government and half by the local shool committees. This represents the acquisition of some 130,000 books. Some of the schools have (with Government assistance) purchased up to £500 worth of books. Very few schools spend less than £5 a year. It has been possible in a number of schools to install good library furniture on the same £1 for £1 subsidy basis. The Government proposes to adopt as a general principle the provision of adequate room and furniture accommodation for a library in every large school, and some shelving at least in every school. What might be regarded as an auxiliary part of the school library service is the system by which sets of Circulating Supplementary Readers are distributed to schools throughout the State. The distribution has been extended until every school in the State has been included, with the exception of a very few schools so isolated that no exchange of books is possible. In all, 100,000 books are circulated among schools as far apart as Forsayth and Coolangatta or Thargomindah and Home Hill. With the help of teachers and of the parents and local school organisations the Government
