He mastered the three principaldialects of China, and was tendered the position ofsecretary to the U. S. embassy at Pekin, and at therecall of Mr. Seward he became acting minister untilthe appointment of John Bussell Young. He is atpresent (1893) a resident of Hartford, Conn., but isstill interested in matters connected with China,which place he visits annually. HOLCOMBE, Curtis Wilson, second auditor inthe land oiflce in Washington for ten years, is a law-yer, and was born at Granby, Conn., Feb. 31, is son of Blihu E. Holcombe, and seventh gen-eration from Thomas Holcombe, the Puritan. HOLCOMBE, Frederick, clergyman, was bornat Granby, Conn., Oct. 13,1786(fifth generation fromThomas Holcombe, at Boston, 1630), the son of Jesse and Louise Pinney Holcombe. He was grad-uated from Williams college in 1809, and afterwardstudied theology for three years, was subsequent-ly stationed at Harwinton, Conn., and in 1814 as-sumed the pastorate of the First Episcopal churchof Watertown, Conn., of which he continued rectoruntil his death. He was one of the founders and atrusteeof Trinity Episcopal college, Hartford, Conn.,and of the Episcopal academy, Cheshire, Conn., andwas awarded the degree of from Trinity col-lege.
