Wherever excava-tions are made in the line of the street, bases of col-umns are found, and fragments of shafts lying pros-trate under accumulated rubbish. This street waslike those seen in Palmyra and Jerash; but thedevastations of war, and the vandalism of Turkishrulers, have destroyed most of its ancient grandeur.
