Josephine Baker (1906-1975), American dancer, actress and singer whose erotic dancing in the 1920s in Paris made her an instant sensation. She used stereotypes of "the savage" in her dancing, while offstage led the life of a glamorous star. Of mixed Native American and African American descent, she was often known as the Black Venus. She married many times and adopted twelve multi-ethnic orphans.
