Foot disorders. Artwork of a human foot showing the disorders: stress fracture, Morton's metatar- salgia, onychogryphosis and hallux valgus. At lower centre is a stress fracture of the second metatarsal bone. Stress fractures are caused by repeated jarring of the bone. Morton's metatar- salgia (mauve, lower centre) is a benign tumour affecting the digital nerve and causing painful pressure. Onychogryphosis, seen on the big toe, is a deformity caused by thickening and hardening of the toenail. Hallux valgus is the condition where the base of the big toe projects outwards whilst the tip of the toe turns inwards. This often leads to the formation of a bunion.
