Pollution belches over withered ears of corn from a factory chimney east of Beijing, an area that is the source of much of the pollution found in the city. Although the government has pledged to close down polluters near the city centre to improve air quality for the 2008 Olympic Games, many factories continue to operate, some opening only at night to avoid detection.
