Our ancestors used the Bow for a double purpose: in timeof war, it was a dreadful instrument of destruction ; and in peace itbecame an object of amusement. It will be needless to insist upon theskill of the English archers, or to mention their wonderful performancesin the field of battle. The victories they obtained over their enemiesare many and glorious; they are their best eulogiums, and stand uponrecord in the histories of this country, for the perusal, and for the ad-miration of posterity. I shall therefore consider this subject in a ge-neral point of view, and confine myself, as much as possible, to suchparts of it as relate to amusement only. II.
