Chronic pancreatitis. Light micrograph of a section through tissue from the pancreas in a case of chronic (persistent and long-lasting) pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, an organ that produces digestive enzymes and the hormone insulin. The cause of chronic pancreatitis is not known, but it is linked to excess alcohol ingestion, long-term steroid use or long-term use of anti-inflammatories. Treatment is of the underlying cause, if identified, and pain relief.
