ELI LILLY, president of the well known pharmaceu-tical manufacturing house of Eli Lilly & Co., Indiana-polis, died June 6, after an illness of about elevenmonths. He was sixty years of age. He had been grad-ually sinking for two months past and the end was notunexpected. Col. Lilly was one of the best known menin Indianapolis. He was born in Baltimore. Md., butwhile he was still an infant his parents removed toKentucky. In 1852 he went to Greencastle,. Ind., wherehe attended De Pauw university and at the same timeworked in a printing office. He next entered a drugstore at Lafayette as apprentice and after learning thebusiness he returned to Greencastle, where he opened astore of his own. About this time the civil war brokeout and Col. Lilly was among the first to enlist. Hesoon received a commission from the Governor to forma battery, which became one of the most famous militaryorganizations engaged in the war.
