Psittacosaurus dinosaur skull fossil. Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved. The cranium is at top, with the beak at left, and eye orbit at centre. These dinosaurs were herbivores, and their parrot-like beaks may have been used to crack nuts. This specimen, from China, dates from 120 million years ago, during the Early Cretaceous.
