Church of S. Giorgio in Velabro, Rome

A sketch by Nelly Erichsen (d. 1918) published in 1901. "From this point we may return by passing through the market-place into the Via S. Teodoro, and so on to the Forum, observing on the left the Arch of Janus Quadrifons and the church of S. Giorgio in Velabro, with its mediæval campinale." The church dates to the 7th century, although it reused earlier Roman masonry in places. The campinale, or bell tower, dates from the 13th century. It seems that the basilica (church building) was greatly altered in the 1920s, some time after this sketch was made.
