In marked displacement of tlie fragments callus-forma-tion is, of course, much more abundant. Considerablemasses of callus are often built in, as it were, like masonrybetween the ends of the fragments. In the case of chil-dren callus-formation is least marked, the periosteum, as arule, is not torn, and forms a sheath about the seat offracture, at the same time guarding the fragments fromdisplacement. [It is to be remembered that callus-formation is veryslight in some fractures ; for example, the oleoranon, thepatella, and the neck of the femur. For this reason infractures of the patella and olecranon, unless Ave can getabsolute approximation we resort to an early perfectapproximation of the fragments with some form of suture;. ^•^ f^
