Naples we have found fascinating and delightfulas ever. Dr. Shearer carried us off to a restaurantto-day, on the hills above Posilipo, where he gaveus wonderful wine, which F. B. appreciated betterthan I. This afternoon we drove out to Solfatara to see the famous amphitheatre, which is one of the best preserved in existence, and where one can see the arrangements for the ancient mimic naval battles [458]. AND COUNTRY SEATS better than anywhere else, the great holes throughwhich water was allowed to come, being in betterpreservation than elsewhere. We also walked overthe steaming ground of the now quiet crater of the oldvolcano of Solfatara, and the guard started the wholeplace in smoke and flames, by lighting a match closeto the little puffs of smoke that come constantly fromthe side hill. It was very interesting, but a little toocalorific to be really amusing, and we did not ground sounds hollow in every direction, but theonly recorded eruption from this place of fearfulappearance was in the year 1198. The visit to the villa was interesting and exciting,and it has been pleasant to find Count Cesnola herewith Dr. Shearer. They are great friends and areliving together. The doctor has cordially asked us tocome and stay with him, but we are eager to get toPalermo in time for the automobile race, and mustleave here soon direct for Palermo. We
