Eye lens and accommodation. Artwork showing the process by which the eye changes the shape of the lens when changing between close vision and distant vision. This process is known as accommodation. At left, close vision occurs when the ciliary muscle (red) contracts and the ciliary body moves closer to the lens (blue). This causes the tension in the suspensory ligaments (white lines) to be reduced, causing the lens to relax to a more rounded state. At right, the opposite occurs, and the ligament tension flattens the lens, allowing distance vision.
