Terra Nova Antarctic winter party. Members of the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913) at a celebratory Midwinter Day Dinner held in their base camp hut on 22 June 1911 to mark the midpoint of the long polar night. The menu included seal soup, roast beef, plum pudding, mince pies, fish, nuts, fruits, chocolates and champagne. Royal Navy officer and expedition leader Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) is at the head of the table, with sledging flags overhead. Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the shore party of 34 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from their journey to the South Pole.
